New report ranks Philadelphia, Allentown among toughest cities for people with asthma

Philadelphia, PALocal News

Philadelphia ranks No. 4 among the "asthma capitals" in the U. S. , per a report by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America released on September 9, 2025. Allentown improved to No.

3 from No. 1 in 2024, while Harrisburg and Pittsburgh ranked No. 15 and No. 44, respectively. The report reveals that September is the peak month for asthma attacks, driven by increased pollen, mold, and poor indoor air quality in schools.

Many Pennsylvania schools lack effective indoor air quality plans, with less than 4% having one in place, contributing to asthma triggers. There is a growing concern over the affordability of asthma medications, with some inhalers capped at $35, yet many patients still face high costs for other types of medication. Lawmakers are urged to impose price caps on asthma medications and improve air quality in schools to address these issues. Creative initiatives, like those led by students in Australia, may serve as models for local efforts. Addressing the asthma crisis requires comprehensive action from various stakeholders, including families, schools, and state leaders.
