Marriage Record Requests Soar As Real ID Takes Effect

Philadelphia, PALocal News

Philadelphia's Register of Wills office reported a dramatic 249% increase in marriage record requests this year, issuing 9,475 records from January 1 to August 1. This surge correlates with the implementation of the Real ID program, which mandates that individuals show proof of their legal name when applying for a Real ID. Register John Sabatina noted that the office issued 4,056 records between March 1 and May 7, compared to just 1,291 during the same timeframe last year. To alleviate the increased demand, the office has conducted over 20 pop-up events throughout Philadelphia since April, offering a streamlined process for constituents. Sabatina emphasized the professionalism and promptness of his staff in managing these requests.

The service costs $40 for a standard marriage record, while same-day service is available for $70. Individuals can also order records by mail, providing further options for obtaining necessary documentation. The Real ID law, effective since May 7, requires individuals to present federally accepted identification for air travel and access to federal facilities.
