Los mercados de agricultores promueven el acceso a frutas y verduras frescas
Farmers' markets have been a staple in Philadelphia since 1858, currently numbering over 30 across the city. In 2023, food insecurity affected more than 210,000 residents, with Black and Hispanic households particularly impacted. These markets connect urban communities to local agriculture, providing access to fresh produce. The Division of Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention (CDIP) initiated Mini-Grants for Farmers' Markets, awarding $2,000 to fourteen selected markets in low-income areas. This initiative aims to combat food insecurity and improve access to healthy foods.
Additionally, CDIP updated the Farmers' Market Operator Guide, offering resources for new market establishment. The guide includes city requirements and best practices from experienced market operators. CDIP's efforts highlight the importance of supporting local agriculture and addressing food access disparities.
