Farmers markets promote access to fresh fruits and vegetables
Philadelphia has hosted farmers' markets since at least 1858, with over 30 markets currently enhancing food access citywide. In 2023, more than 210,000 residents faced food insecurity, with 22% of Black households and 23% of Hispanic households lacking access to nutritious foods. The Health Department's CDIP launched Farmers' Market Mini-Grants in March 2025, providing $2,000 each to 14 selected markets in low-income areas. These markets strive to offer fresh, locally-grown produce and accept various nutrition assistance programs, including SNAP/ACCESS cards. The updated Farmers' Market Operator Guide provides essential resources for new market operators, including city requirements and best practices.
CDIP collaborates with partners to ensure these resources support community needs effectively. Through these efforts, CDIP seeks to improve food access and community resilience in Philadelphia. The initiative responds to ongoing disparities in healthy food access, aiming for lasting impact in affected neighborhoods.
