Research highlights importance of Black educators in Philly classrooms

Philadelphia, PALocal News

Philadelphia students emphasize the vital role Black educators play in their college decision-making. Research shows that Black teachers enhance academic performance among Black students, improving test scores and reducing suspensions. However, only 3. 7% of teachers in Pennsylvania are Black, while 14. 5% of students are.

Many students express feelings of comfort and trust when interacting with Black teachers, viewing them as empathetic and dedicated to their overall well-being. LaMont, a student, shared that having Black educators inspires confidence and demonstrates that success is attainable. This underrepresentation of Black teachers poses significant challenges for Black students in diverse communities. The impact of Black educators extends beyond academic performance to fostering a supportive environment for students facing critical life decisions. Addressing this disparity is crucial for enhancing educational equity and student success.
