Meta joins others at UPenn event to support AI that enhances public safety
Philadelphia is set to host one of six FIFA World Cup games on July 4, 2026, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. As the city gears up for this major event, public safety agencies are exploring innovative solutions, particularly artificial intelligence tools, to bolster their emergency response capabilities. A recent workshop at the University of Pennsylvania highlighted the use of Meta's Llama AI model, focusing on collaborations among tri-state emergency service agencies. Director Laura McGorman noted that AI can help mitigate the effects of natural disasters, which are increasing in frequency and severity in Philadelphia. Meta’s open-source AI models allow agencies to customize solutions based on historical data and mobility patterns, enhancing disaster preparedness.
Projects at UPenn include the development of robotics for autonomous search and rescue, improving healthcare responses in disaster situations. AI applications also extend to analyzing mobility data to assist evacuation efforts during emergencies. This integration of technology into public safety represents a significant advancement in how cities prepare for and respond to crises.
