Tacony Academy Charter addresses workforce demand through new medical, technical skills program
Philadelphia's Tacony Academy Charter School has launched the Medical and Technical Skills Institute (MTSI) to address Pennsylvania's looming workforce shortage, projected to exceed 300,000 skilled workers by 2030. CEO Naimah Wimberly leads the initiative, which aims to equip students with essential career-ready skills and recognized certifications in high-demand fields such as healthcare and technology. The first course will center on Phlebotomy Technician certification in partnership with Vital Veins Phlebotomy, providing students with hands-on training and the opportunity to earn credentials on-site. Wimberly highlighted the importance of the program in preparing students not just for jobs, but for leadership roles in their communities. Resumé workshops, mock interviews, and social-emotional guidance will supplement technical training.
Founded in 2009, Tacony Academy serves around 1,075 students and focuses on a STEM curriculum that promotes innovation. Wimberly's vision for the MTSI program stems from her experience as the founding principal, emphasizing the need for practical skills in today's job market. Tacony Academy will celebrate the graduation of its first cohort on August 2.
