Philly teens step up as play captains for summer of fun and leadership

Philadelphia, PALocal News

Fab Youth Philly launched its Play Captain Initiative, training teens aged 14-19 to lead playful activities in designated PlayStreets across Philadelphia. The program, which kicked off this week, focuses on community involvement in Kensington, aiming to uplift local youth amid various challenges. Each play captain works under the guidance of an adult leader, engaging children with games and learning tools. Participants prepare by filling carts with supplies and using "Bex Decks" for planning and safety protocols. Former participants, like Mazzi Ingram, return to mentor new leaders, highlighting the initiative's role in fostering personal growth and community connection.

Ingram shared her experience of guiding a youth with college aspirations, emphasizing the importance of creating positive pipelines for change. The Play Captain Initiative not only promotes summer fun but also cultivates leadership skills among local teens. This program reflects the community's commitment to support youth in navigating their environments positively.
