City of Philadelphia Continues to Deliver Services to Residents Visitors throughout the July 4th Holiday Weekend, and Provides Update on Operations

Philadelphia, PALocal News

Philadelphia is actively maintaining essential services amidst a work stoppage by AFSCME District Council 33 that started on July 1, 2025. The union represents about 9,000 municipal workers, leading to the activation of an emergency plan by the City. Key services such as 911 and sanitation remain operational, bolstered by a judicial order that restored critical staff at the Medical Examiner’s Office. The return of Medical Examiner staff is crucial to prevent public health risks associated with unattended bodies. City officials request residents to properly utilize dumpsters for trash disposal to streamline sanitation efforts.

Adam K. Thiel, Managing Director, expressed gratitude for the hard work of city employees during the holiday weekend. The City aims to balance fiscal responsibility with fair treatment of its workers. Ongoing negotiations with the union are expected as the situation develops.
