Strong language access, stronger communities
Philadelphia's Language Access services provided support to over 359,000 residents in 2024, offering more than 160,000 services across 89 languages. These resources, including translation and interpretation, are crucial for helping residents connect with city government. Deise Rodrigues, Director of Language Access Programs, highlighted her personal journey as an immigrant and the barriers she faced, reinforcing her dedication to this initiative. Kahlil Thomas, a Quality Translator Coordinator, shared how immigrant communities positively impacted his upbringing, driving his passion for language access. Rob Brown, a Language Access VISTA, recounted his experiences living in Germany, which deepened his understanding of communication challenges faced by non-native speakers.
The initiative not only enhances individual lives but also strengthens community cohesion and inclusivity. Language Access Philly's work ensures all residents can access vital information and services, fostering a healthier and safer city.
