'A nuisance to the neighborhood' City demos former drug house
In a significant move to enhance community safety, Long Beach has demolished a dilapidated property on Washington Avenue North, notorious for drug activity and ongoing code violations for nearly 20 years. The city allocated around $50,000 for cleanup and demolition, with hopes of recouping these costs through the auction of the two lots, estimated to be worth about $200,000. Mayor Jerry Phillips noted the challenges faced, including a severe flea infestation that hindered initial inspections for asbestos. A public notice was issued in December 2021, deeming the property ‘unfit for human habitation’ due to its extensive disrepair. The property, owned by Kenneth Herman, had been a focal point of community complaints, including illegal drug sales and abandoned vehicles.
Neighbors expressed their relief at the demolition, marking a pivotal step toward reclaiming their neighborhood. This action reflects the city's commitment to improving local living conditions and addressing long-standing issues. The successful demolition signifies a positive shift for the Long Beach community, which has long awaited this resolution.
