'It's tragic he isn't here' Vigil held in Olympia for 5-year-old who died from fentanyl
A vigil was held at the state capitol to remember Brentlee Lawrence, a 5-year-old boy from Pierce County who died from acute fentanyl toxicity while in his mother's care. In March, his mother discovered him unresponsive, leading to a medical examination that confirmed the cause of death. Kelsey Osborne, Lawrence's aunt, revealed that she, along with his pediatrician and others, had previously contacted Child Protective Services (CPS) to help the boy. Osborne claimed that the Keeping Families Together Act (HB1227) restricts CPS from removing children from homes where drug abuse occurs, arguing that this legislation contributes to preventable deaths. She stated, "Common sense would tell you if you have a drug as deadly as fentanyl, it's imminent harm.
" The tragedy underscores the urgent need for legislative reform to protect vulnerable children from the dangers of substance abuse in their homes. Osborne's advocacy highlights the broader issue of rising fentanyl-related fatalities among minors. Lawmakers are urged to reevaluate the implications of current child welfare laws to prevent further loss of life.
