Tenino Moves Historic Train Depot, 1975
In 1975, Tenino officials moved the historic train depot to City Park after Burlington Northern Railroad offered it for $1. The depot, originally built in 1914 from Tenino Sandstone, had deteriorated after its closure in 1961 and was covered in graffiti. The South Thurston County Historical Society formed to manage the relocation, raising over $100,000 through grants and community efforts. Among the funds, a $35,000 grant from the National Park Service and contributions from local organizations played a crucial role. The move became a significant local event, celebrated during the annual Labor Day festival, with the main event on August 30, 1975.
Crowds gathered to witness the historic building being transported through town, showcasing community spirit. The depot now stands as the Tenino Depot Museum, highlighting the town's rich history. This successful relocation reflects the importance of preserving local heritage and engaging community support.
