Increased Motorcycle Safety Patrols During Oyster Run

Oak Harbor, WALocal News

Law enforcement agencies will enhance motorcycle safety patrols from September 26-28 during the 42nd Annual Oyster Run near Anacortes, WA, to reduce fatal crashes. This initiative follows a 20% decrease in motorcyclist fatalities in 2024, which saw 113 deaths compared to a record 142 in 2023. Officials remain concerned about the overall rise in vehicle crashes, as motorcycles, representing only 3% of registered vehicles, accounted for 16% of traffic fatalities over the last five years. Mark Medalen, Motorcycle Safety Program Manager at WTSC, stated that the fatalities are largely preventable, highlighting the need for continued safety efforts. The Washington Traffic Safety Commission's "Ride Safe, Ride On" program provides valuable resources for motorcyclists and vehicle drivers.

It encourages safe riding practices and promotes awareness among all road users. As the Oyster Run approaches, drivers are advised to maintain safe distances and avoid distractions. The commitment to safety aims to ensure that participants enjoy the event while minimizing risks on the road.
