Indigenous art related to Pattullo Bridge replacement reflects First Nations connections to area
The Pattullo Bridge Replacement Project in Surrey has integrated its first Indigenous art installation, designed by Kwantlen First Nation artist Phyllis Atkins, into the new Highway 17-Old Yale Road overpass. The artwork, featuring sturgeon and eulachon, signifies the deep connections First Nations have to the Fraser River. Traffic shifted onto the overpass on June 2, 2025, allowing uninterrupted flow above Old Yale Road and enhancing local transportation. This cultural recognition program aims to educate the public about First Nations history and stewardship through art and storytelling. The new bridge's name, significant in the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language, will be revealed in coming months by the Musqueam Indian Band and Kwantlen First Nation.
The project area overlaps with the historical boundaries of two former reserves, highlighting its cultural importance. Atkins' artwork is dedicated to her friend Garrett Martindale, reflecting her lifelong connection to the Fraser River. As construction progresses, the new infrastructure aims to honor and celebrate Indigenous heritage while improving regional connectivity.
