Homes proposed for people needing support in Burnaby

North Vancouver, BCLocal News

Burnaby officials proposed 50 new supportive and complex-care homes to assist people facing homelessness, pending approval. The project, a collaboration between BC Housing, the City of Burnaby, and Fraser Health, will create 40 supportive homes and 10 complex-care homes at 5389 Imperial St. Christine Boyle, Minister of Housing, emphasized the importance of safe housing with tailored support for vulnerable populations. The supportive homes will consist of affordable, self-contained studio apartments, while Fraser Health will provide enhanced on-site health and social supports for complex-care residents. If approved, the homes will provide stability and access to vital health and social services, helping residents overcome significant barriers, including mental health and substance use challenges.

The city aims to connect individuals living outdoors or in encampments with necessary services. This initiative is part of a wider $19-billion investment in housing by the B. C. government, which has delivered over 93,600 homes since 2017. Mayor Mike Hurley highlighted the project's role in offering compassion and a pathway to permanent housing for those in need.
