Farmers market program delivers another bountiful harvest
The B. C. Farmers’ Market Nutrition Coupon Program enhances access to fresh, locally grown foods for families and individuals with lower incomes throughout British Columbia. Funded with $4. 25 million from the province, the program allows participants to redeem coupons at over 100 farmers' markets, benefiting more than 8,500 households in 94 communities.
Health Minister Josie Osborne highlighted the initiative's role in promoting healthy eating and supporting local agriculture. Each household can receive up to $27 weekly for 16 weeks, allowing access to fresh produce, dairy, and meats. Social Development Minister Sheila Malcolmson noted the importance of food access for seniors and families, emphasizing the program's local economic impact. The B. C.
Association of Farmers’ Markets manages the program, which has operated since 2012 and has supported nearly five million visits annually to farmers' markets. Despite its success, the program is currently at capacity and not accepting new applications for this year. This initiative not only improves food security but also strengthens local economies, generating over $232 million for B. C. farmers and communities.
