Pipeline project determined to be substantially started
The Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) confirmed that the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission (PRGT) pipeline project has substantially started, ensuring the validity of its environmental assessment certificate. Initially issued in 2014, the certificate mandated that substantial progress occur by November 25, 2024. The EAO conducted a thorough assessment process, gathering evidence and perspectives from First Nations and the public to inform its decision. The chief executive assessment officer found that the completed physical work aligns with standard pipeline development and indicates a strong intention by the company to advance the project. EAO compliance and enforcement officers will oversee the project during construction and operation to ensure adherence to environmental standards.
The PRGT pipeline will transport approximately 2 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day, with capacity for future expansion. The project was acquired in March 2024 by Nisga’a Nation and Western LNG to supply the proposed Ksi Lisims LNG facility. Additionally, the EAO is assessing amendment requests to modify the pipeline route and reroute the eastern section.
