Tripartite agreement reached between Tilhqotin Nation, B.C., Taseko Mines Limited
The Tŝilhqot’in Nation, the Province of British Columbia, and Taseko Mines Limited signed the Teẑtan Biny Gagaghut’i Agreement to settle disputes over mineral rights in the Teẑtan Biny area. This agreement requires Tŝilhqot’in consent for any future mining activities, representing a major step towards reconciliation between First Nations and mining interests. The Province will seek orders to formalize this requirement under the Environmental Assessment Act, ensuring Tŝilhqot’in voices are heard in project reviews. Minister Jagrup Brar stressed the importance of collaboration among all parties, while Minister Christine Boyle reaffirmed commitments to Indigenous self-determination. Chief Roger William expressed the historic nature of the agreement, noting it protects Tŝilhqot’in rights and ends decades of conflict.
The Province will also pay Taseko Mines a one-time sum of $75 million to facilitate the resolution of long-standing issues. Taseko has agreed not to operate future mining at the New Prosperity Project and can divest its interest in it. This agreement not only resolves litigation but also opens the door for potential future development with Tŝilhqot’in consent.
