More Sons of Freedom Doukhobors receive support to heal
The B. C. government has expanded its financial health support for the Sons of Freedom Doukhobor community as part of a formal apology for historical injustices. Living survivors who were not school-aged when apprehended, along with descendants of deceased survivors—including spouses, common-law partners, and legally adopted children—are now eligible for funds. This initiative recognizes the trauma endured by hundreds of children who faced abuse in New Denver institutions between 1953 and 1959.
Individuals who think they qualify but have not been contacted can email the Ministry of Attorney General at sofd@gov. bc. ca, with a deadline of January 2026 to apply. In February 2024, the Province issued a formal apology for the suffering experienced by the Doukhobors, particularly the Sons of Freedom. This financial support aims to honor the legacy of the New Denver survivors and facilitate their healing.
The Doukhobors, a group that fled persecution in Russia in 1899, faced significant government oppression in Canada throughout the 20th century. The support represents a crucial step in acknowledging the community's historical struggles and assisting in their recovery.
