B. C. 's racist incident helpline, launched on May 30, 2024, has assisted 807 individuals, with approximately 94% reporting their needs met. This toll-free, multilingual service provides support and referrals for discrimination based on skin color, culture, or ethnicity. In its first year, the helpline has made over 2,329 referrals, more than double California's hate helpline figures, highlighting its significant impact despite B.
C. 's smaller population. Callers often seek assistance in various areas, indicating the complex nature of coping with racism. The Province invested $2. 2 million in 32 community organizations to enhance services and address diverse needs.
Jessie Sunner, parliamentary secretary for anti-racism initiatives, called the helpline a vital link between trauma and essential services. As a helpline staff member noted, supporting individuals from racialized communities brings fulfillment amid ongoing challenges.
