Investment in anti-violence projects supports Indigenous people in B.C.
British Columbia's Path Forward Community Fund has invested nearly $21 million to address violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ individuals since its inception in 2022. This funding has supported 86 Indigenous-led projects, such as anti-violence workshops and gatherings focused on Two-Spirit and LGBTQQIA+ community issues. Garry Begg, Minister of Public Safety, emphasized the importance of empowering Indigenous communities to develop their own solutions. This year, the fund received an additional $5 million through the National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence. Managed by the B.
C. Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres, the initiative aligns with the province's broader efforts to dismantle systemic racism and enhance racial equity. The release of the 2025 status update coincides with the sixth anniversary of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls report. The province's Path Forward includes 28 commitments to align with the inquiry's Calls for Justice. Officials highlight the ongoing collaboration needed to create a safer environment for Indigenous communities.
