BC Parks improves accessibility, inclusion
BC Parks has implemented extensive accessibility upgrades, enhancing facilities for individuals with disabilities as part of the BC Parks Commitment to Inclusion initiated in March 2023. These improvements include upgraded washrooms, parking lots, and access trails in various parks across British Columbia. Minister Tamara Davidson emphasized the need for meaningful access, which encompasses both physical upgrades and collaboration with communities. Notable projects include accessible parking and compact gravel pathways at Ross Lake Park, along with beach accessibility enhancements at Jimsmith Lake Park. This year, BC Parks is actively working on over 20 projects aimed at improving outdoor access for individuals with disabilities.
Partnerships with organizations like the Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre have facilitated virtual ASL nature tours, broadening access to park experiences. The BC Parks Foundation plays a crucial role in funding these initiatives and enhancing park facilities. Andy Day, CEO of the BC Parks Foundation, stated that inclusivity in parks is vital for the well-being of all British Columbians.
