Highway 1 bus lane construction begins between McKenzie, Colwood interchanges

North Vancouver, BCLocal News

Construction has begun on the Highway 1 bus-on-shoulder project, which will establish dedicated bus lanes from the McKenzie to the Colwood Interchange. This initiative is designed to improve transit efficiency for commuters traveling between downtown Victoria and the Westshore. During construction, drivers can expect daytime lane shifts, and overnight closures of the Burnside Road on-ramp and Helmcken overpass may occur as needed. Additionally, the Galloping Goose Trail may experience short-term closures. The project is a crucial component of the South Island Transportation Strategy, which aims to create a rapid transit corridor as part of BC Transit’s RapidBus program.

It will also feature a new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists, enhancing active transportation options. Jointly funded by the province and federal government, the project represents a significant investment in local infrastructure. Completion is anticipated by late fall 2027, promising improved transit and reduced congestion in the region.
