Construction begins on student housing at SFU, more child care on the way
Simon Fraser University (SFU) has commenced construction on a new student residence, set to provide 445 additional beds on its Burnaby campus by fall 2027. This eight-storey building will offer a mix of studio and multi-bedroom apartments, addressing the growing demand for student housing. Alongside this, a child care facility is slated to begin construction later this year, which will add 160 new spaces to the existing 410, bringing the total to over 570 child care spots available for the SFU community. The total capital cost of $196. 6 million is shared between the Province and SFU, underscoring the government's commitment to enhancing student infrastructure.
This initiative is part of SFU's Phase 3 housing expansion, which has already seen the addition of 856 beds in previous phases. Officials highlight that access to housing and child care significantly impacts students' ability to thrive academically. The government has committed $2 billion since 2018 to expand student housing across British Columbia, with over 6,100 beds now available. With these developments, SFU aims to foster a supportive environment for its students and their families.
