Construction begins on 65 new affordable homes for Indigenous people in Mission
The Government of B. C. plans to build 65 affordable homes for Indigenous families in Mission, with a $19 million investment. Partnering with the Kwantlen First Nation, the initiative aims to provide culturally safe housing for low-income individuals. The new development will consist of a variety of unit sizes, including 12 one-bedroom, 32 two-bedroom, and 18 three-bedroom homes, emphasizing family-oriented living.
Located on Kwantlen land, the project will feature community spaces and recreational areas, enhancing social interaction among residents. This effort is part of the Building BC: Indigenous Housing Fund, which allocates $1. 7 billion to create 3,500 new homes for Indigenous Peoples. Since 2017, the B. C.
government has committed to addressing the housing crisis, delivering nearly 92,000 homes. The Kwantlen First Nation Affordable Housing Society will own and operate the development, ensuring community involvement in management. This project exemplifies the importance of Indigenous-led initiatives in fostering sustainable and supportive living environments.
