New B.C. council launched to support forestry in B.C.
B. C. has launched the Provincial Forest Advisory Council to enhance forest stewardship and support communities reliant on forestry. This initiative, part of the Cooperation and Responsible Government Accord 2025, aims to produce clear, measurable outcomes for healthy forests and ecosystems. Co-chaired by Garry Merkel and Shannon Janzen, the council comprises experts from various sectors, including First Nations representatives.
Minister of Forests Ravi Parmar highlighted forestry's role in providing good-paying jobs while safeguarding biodiversity. The council will engage with industry partners and experts to ensure an inclusive review process. Rob Botterell from the BC Greens emphasized the need for transformative actions grounded in sustainability. Merkel indicated that a long-term, ecosystem-based plan is essential for stability in the forestry sector. The council will deliver an interim report this fall, followed by a comprehensive final report by the end of 2025.
