February, March 2025 unregulated drug toxicity data released
The BC Coroners Service reported 132 unregulated drug toxicity deaths in February and 143 in March 2025, with 67% of the victims aged between 30 and 59 years. Fentanyl was found in 70% of expedited toxicology tests, followed by methamphetamine and fluorofentanyl. The Fraser and Vancouver Coastal health authorities reported the highest death tolls, representing 60% of all cases in the province. Notably, over 45% of deaths occurred in private residences, and smoking was the primary consumption method for 62% of decedents. The data remains preliminary and subject to updates as investigations progress.
This trend marks the sixth consecutive month with fewer than 160 drug toxicity deaths reported. The findings underscore the persistent public health crisis surrounding unregulated drugs in British Columbia. Efforts to address this issue are critical as the province continues to grapple with the impacts of the opioid epidemic.
