B.C. ranchers, farmers urged to protect livestock as wildfire risk increases
Ranchers and farmers in British Columbia are encouraged to register their livestock locations with the mandatory Premises ID program as wildfire season nears. This registration allows emergency responders to access critical information quickly during crises, ensuring the safety of animals. Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture and Food, highlighted the commitment of producers to their animals' well-being. Currently, more than 10,000 ranchers and farmers are registered, with full participation from supply-managed producers and over 80% of cattle producers. Premises ID is a vital component of B.
C. ’s animal traceability system, which also includes animal identification and movement reporting. This program not only aids in emergency response but also supports local meat supply chains. Jamie Vieira, from the Thompson-Nicola Regional District, noted that having a Premises ID enables local governments to assist residents more effectively during evacuations. The initiative is essential for enhancing livestock welfare and improving community preparedness for emergencies.
