Use caution, be fire safe this weekend
The BC Wildfire Service warns of heightened wildfire risks in southern British Columbia due to a combination of warm, dry weather and strong winds. Minister of Forests Ravi Parmar emphasized the preventable nature of most human-caused wildfires, urging residents to avoid open burning and to be cautious while camping. “This is the time of year when we’re at the most risk for human-caused wildfires in B. C. ,” he stated.
Campers should adhere to safety tips, such as avoiding campfires in windy conditions and ensuring fire pits are adequately distanced from flammable materials. Open-burning prohibitions are expected to be enacted soon and will be updated as necessary. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about current wildfire situations and follow local government instructions. The BC Wildfire Service mobile app provides updates and allows reporting of new wildfires. The public is reminded to report any wildfires to help inform operational decisions.
