Second urgent and primary care centre opening in Nanaimo

The Central Nanaimo UPCC, opening on May 1, 2025, will be located at 3260 Norwell Dr. and is projected to handle over 86,000 patient visits annually. Minister of Health Josie Osborne stated that this facility will enhance primary care access in the vibrant Nanaimo region. The centre will connect approximately 4,770 residents to healthcare providers and offer same-day access for urgent, non-emergency health issues. Leah Hollins, board chair of Island Health, noted the significant collaboration with the Snuneymuxw First Nation to create a culturally safe environment.

The UPCC will be open from 8 a. m. to 8 p. m. every day and will provide both in-person and virtual care options.

The Nanaimo Outpatient Stabilization Service will also relocate to this new facility, enhancing support for patients with specific health conditions. The government has allocated $8. 8 million annually for operating costs, ensuring the UPCC's sustainability. This facility represents a crucial step in addressing the growing healthcare needs of the Nanaimo community.
