Province reviews public post-secondary system to ensure long-term sustainability
The Province of British Columbia is launching an independent review of its public post-secondary education system, seeking to enhance sustainability and meet future workforce needs. Minister Jessie Sunner highlighted the importance of a skilled workforce for economic growth, as institutions grapple with financial pressures from federal study permit reductions and declining enrolment. Don Avison, the former B. C. deputy minister, will lead the review and deliver recommendations by March 15, 2026.
The review will focus on governance, program delivery, and financial sustainability, aiming for operational efficiency and effective program delivery within existing budgets. Input will be gathered from students, faculty, institutional leaders, and Indigenous partners to ensure diverse perspectives are considered. This initiative builds on prior consultations about funding operations in 2021 and 2022, which are now outdated due to significant changes in the sector. The review is intended to align the post-secondary system with labor market needs while maintaining regional access. Ultimately, the goal is to stabilize institutions financially and support B.
C. ’s economic growth.
