Grants enhance safety for groups targeted by hate, violence
Community organizations that face threats from hate-motivated crimes can now apply for grants to improve security and repair damages through the Civil Forfeiture Grant Program’s anti-hate stream. Minister of Public Safety Nina Krieger stated that it is vital for communities to feel safe from hate incidents. Grants will support eligible organizations, including places of worship and 2SLGBTQIA+ groups, allowing them to purchase security equipment, remove graffiti, or repair property. Funding applications are open for the 2025-26 cycle, with expenses incurred from January 1, 2025, eligible for consideration. The Civil Forfeiture Office, which has operated since 2006, aims to repurpose the proceeds of crime for community safety initiatives.
This program represents a proactive approach to enhance safety and support vulnerable communities. By implementing tools like unexplained wealth orders, the office seeks to identify and forfeit criminal profits. Such measures not only disrupt criminal organizations but also address underlying issues contributing to crime.
