New rules on sick notes eliminate unnecessary paperwork
British Columbia has enacted new rules that limit employers from requesting sick notes for short-term absences of five consecutive days or fewer, effective immediately. The regulations respond to feedback from healthcare providers who highlighted the burden of unnecessary medical visits for minor illnesses, such as colds and flu. Minister of Labour Jennifer Whiteside emphasized that sick individuals should not face the additional stress of obtaining a doctor's note. This initiative is designed to reduce administrative tasks for healthcare professionals, allowing them to devote more time to patient care. Minister of Health Josie Osborne affirmed that these changes promote public health by encouraging workers to stay home when ill without the fear of job repercussions.
The regulations establish a minimum standard applicable to all employees covered by the Employment Standards Act. Healthcare providers across the province have called for relief from paperwork burdens, and this initiative is a significant step in that direction. As of November 2025, several Canadian provinces, including Saskatchewan and Ontario, have adopted similar regulations regarding sick notes.
