EAO approves second floating workcamp for Woodfibre LNG project
The Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) approved a second floating workcamp, or 'floatel', for the Woodfibre LNG construction site located southwest of Squamish, B. C. This decision followed a comprehensive review involving the EAO, Squamish Nation, and the federal Impact Assessment Agency of Canada. The first floatel has been accommodating workers since June 2024 under strict conditions to address local housing and community service impacts. The new floatel must connect to the BC Hydro power grid by June 1, 2026, and will require additional air-quality monitoring during the temporary use of diesel generators.
The EAO reinforced the importance of compliance monitoring to ensure the project meets all requirements throughout its construction and operation. The facility aims to process and liquefy natural gas, with an expected completion date in 2027. The EAO's decision reflects its commitment to assessing environmental, social, and cultural impacts on First Nations and local communities. Public input was considered in the review process, highlighting community engagement in environmental assessment decisions.
