Record number of shelter spaces opening before winter
British Columbia has opened a record 6,486 shelter spaces this winter, significantly aiding individuals experiencing homelessness. This funding covers 4,158 permanent shelters, 1,154 temporary shelters, and 771 extreme-weather response units that activate during severe weather alerts. The HEARTH program has also seen growth, with 403 shelter spaces now available, nearly 2. 5 times more than last winter. BC Housing is working with municipalities to identify additional locations for shelters as colder weather approaches.
The Ministry of Emergency Management provides guidance and funding for local governments to establish emergency warming centers during extreme cold, ensuring people have safe places to warm up. As of June 30, 2025, the Province has delivered more than 93,600 homes, including over 9,400 supportive housing units. This effort reflects a commitment to addressing homelessness, with shelter spaces having more than doubled since 2017. The collaboration with local entities is vital for enhancing community support and resources.
