Simon Fraser University (SFU) launches its medical school application process, marking the first new medical school in Western Canada in nearly 60 years. The facility aims to combat the pressing need for primary-care physicians in British Columbia, with classes starting at the interim SFU Surrey campus in August 2026. The permanent school will be located in Surrey City Centre, featuring a mix of classrooms, research labs, and an outpatient clinic to provide direct health services to the community. Premier David Eby emphasized the importance of this initiative in making Surrey a hub for high-quality healthcare. The first class will include 48 students, with plans to grow to 120 students by 2035.

Students will engage in clinical training from their second month, working directly with patients across various healthcare settings. The project is a collaboration involving the Province, SFU, and local health authorities. Applications are available on the SFU website, with acceptance notifications anticipated in May or June 2026.
