Construction begins on improvements to Tribune Bay campground
The Tribune Bay campground redevelopment on Hornby Island has begun, marking a significant investment of $6. 6 million to improve the camping experience. The first phase will introduce diverse accommodations, including pull-through and back-in sites, as well as small cabins, catering to modern camping expectations. To enhance the park's ecosystem, over 5,000 new plants will be added, contributing to biodiversity and stormwater management. The redevelopment will also involve relocating approximately 40 campsites to ensure better spacing and privacy for visitors, with new sites expected to be constructed by winter 2027.
Phase 1 construction is anticipated to conclude by May 2026, while public engagement for Phase 2 is set to begin in the coming months. Additionally, BC Parks plans to replace the aging picnic shelter in the day-use area, which may lead to temporary closures of some trails and facilities. Tribune Bay Park is celebrated for its stunning natural features, including unique rock formations and a sandy beach. This initiative follows the Province's acquisition of two properties in 2021, emphasizing a commitment to preserving the site's character and values through extensive public outreach and consultation.
