Province extends funds for drop-in services to help people in Downtown Eastside
The Province of British Columbia announced the extension of funding for drop-in services in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, providing critical support for individuals facing homelessness. Watari Counselling and Support Services will receive more than $1. 2 million, and Aboriginal Front Door Society will be allocated approximately $625,000 until March 31, 2026. These funds will ensure the continuation of essential services such as hot meals, showers, and secure storage for personal belongings. Vancouver's Mayor Ken Sim highlighted the necessity of safe, welcoming spaces for vulnerable residents.
The Province collaborates with local governments, community members, and Indigenous partners to address the unique needs of the Downtown Eastside community. The funding is part of the broader Supporting the Downtown Eastside: Provincial Partnership Plan aimed at improving access to housing and support services. Since 2017, more than 93,600 homes have been delivered or are underway across the province, including over 11,700 in Vancouver. This substantial investment reflects a commitment to addressing homelessness and enhancing community connections.
