Two allied health profession programs expanded to Vancouver Island
The University of British Columbia (UBC) and the University of Victoria (UVic) have collaborated to expand allied health programs to Vancouver Island, introducing a master of physical therapy and a master of science in speech-language pathology. Minister of Post-Secondary Education Jessie Sunner highlighted the crucial role of trained health professionals in British Columbia's healthcare system. The programs, which commenced in September 2024, will support 20 physical therapy and eight speech-language pathology students each year. Funding from the Province includes $15 million for facility enhancements and $9. 1 million for operational costs.
Health Minister Josie Osborne stated that these initiatives will increase the availability of skilled professionals on the island. B. C. ’s 2024 Labour Market Outlook predicts 720 job openings for speech-language pathologists and audiologists over the next decade, with many in the Vancouver Island region. UBC's dean pro tem, Dr.
Mieke Koehoorn, noted that local training opportunities will strengthen community health networks. This expansion aims to improve healthcare access and support families in their communities.
