Resources available to support campus overdose prevention, response
As post-secondary students return to campus, British Columbia is prioritizing overdose prevention resources. The Province distributed 1,600 naloxone kits to institutions, ensuring quick access to life-saving medication in emergencies. Minister Jessie Sunner highlighted the need for enhanced safety measures, directing the creation of guidelines for public post-secondary institutions. The Overdose Prevention and Response Steering Committee is tasked with updating these guidelines to improve campus safety. Colleges like Camosun College and the College of New Caledonia are actively engaging in education, harm reduction, and timely access to resources.
They emphasize safety as a shared responsibility, equipping campuses with naloxone kits and training staff to respond to overdoses. Mental health and addiction services are also available to support students, including the Foundry network and Here2Talk. These comprehensive measures reflect a commitment to addressing the toxic-drug crisis and protecting student well-being.
