New middle school coming for Kelowna students

The Province of British Columbia has approved funding for a new middle school in Kelowna, adding 800 seats to accommodate the increasing student population in the Glenmore neighbourhood. Minister of Infrastructure Bowinn Ma stated that the new school is essential to ensure educational support for families choosing Kelowna. The Burtch Road Middle School aims to relieve pressure on existing schools while promoting community engagement. Julia Fraser, chair of the Central Okanagan Public Schools’ Board of Education, expressed her gratitude for the investment, noting its significance for students and families. The project is estimated to cost approximately $101 million and is part of a broader commitment of over $400 million for school construction and upgrades in the area.

Since 2017, the Province has created nearly 4,400 new student spaces in Kelowna, with 1,770 completed. The new school will also feature culturally responsive spaces designed in consultation with Indigenous communities, reflecting a commitment to reconciliation. This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance educational facilities and meet the needs of the growing population in Kelowna.
