British Columbia is set to enhance child care accessibility by opening 640 new spaces on school grounds, benefiting families in 12 communities. The initiative, endorsed by Education and Child Care Minister Lisa Beare, reflects a commitment to providing affordable and quality care as the school year begins. The funding exceeds $23. 5 million and comes from the ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund, supported by provincial and federal investments. Federal Secretary of State for Children and Youth Anna Gainey noted that this initiative will help remove children from waitlists and reduce costs for parents.

Eighteen new centers will be operational shortly, many run by school district staff, offering a streamlined drop-off process for families. The program aims to create child care options tailored to the unique needs of families, ensuring safety and familiarity for children. Additionally, the Province's fee-reduction program can lower child care costs by up to $900 per month. Since 2018, ChildCareBC's initiatives have funded over 41,500 licensed child care spaces, with 26,200 currently operational.
