Deputy provincial health officers statement on back-to-school vaccinations
Dr. Martin Lavoie, British Columbia’s deputy provincial health officer, urges parents to ensure their children are vaccinated as schools prepare to reopen. He warns of rising measles cases in the province and emphasizes that vaccination is crucial to prevent serious diseases. Parents should check their children's immunization records and schedule any necessary vaccinations, as children under 18 qualify for publicly funded vaccines. Vaccination clinics are held in health units, community health centers, and some pharmacies, enhancing accessibility.
In Grade 6, students are offered the HPV vaccine, and additional vaccines are provided in Grade 9. Parents can visit HealthLink BC for information on immunization schedules and to access the Health Gateway for record checking. Furthermore, those immunized outside of B. C. can update their records in the Provincial Immunization Registry.
Timely vaccinations are essential for safeguarding public health as children return to school.
