Kitsumkalum First Nation initiates Treaty ratification campaign
Kitsumkalum First Nation announced November 1, 2025, as the ratification date for its treaty, concluding over three decades of negotiations. Chief Councillor Troy Sam highlighted the importance of community engagement, urging all members to participate in the decision-making process. The treaty would formally recognize the Nation's rights to governance, resource management, and land ownership, empowering Kitsumkalum in their self-determination efforts. Recent policy changes in British Columbia have rejuvenated treaty negotiations, promoting alignment with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. If ratified, the treaty will facilitate socio-economic development and strengthen the nation-to-nation relationship with the governments of Canada and British Columbia.
Spencer Chandra Herbert and Rebecca Alty commended the Kitsumkalum leadership for their commitment to the treaty process. The Kitsumkalum First Nation is part of the Tsimshian First Nations Treaty Society, representing multiple nations in the region. This historic agreement aims to bring positive changes to the Kitsumkalum community and its members.
