New police unit bolsters B.C.s response to human trafficking
British Columbia has launched a counter human trafficking unit (CHTU) to combat human trafficking crimes more effectively. This 12-member team will enhance investigations and support victims through collaboration with local police and agencies. Minister of Public Safety Nina Krieger highlighted the shared responsibility of communities in preventing these crimes. The CHTU is part of a larger provincial strategy, supported by a $230 million investment to strengthen specialized police units. More than $60 million per year is allocated to support over 475 front-line victim services and violence prevention programs.
Human trafficking is a serious violation of human rights, often going undetected due to its complex nature. In 2023, only 43 incidents were reported in B. C. , indicating significant under-reporting. The CHTU aims to address these challenges by providing training and resources to law enforcement and community partners.
