Province strengthens local evacuation routes, public notification planning
The Province of British Columbia is investing nearly $2 million to bolster evacuation routes and public notification systems across 51 communities through the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund. Minister Kelly Greene highlighted the critical need for clear evacuation pathways and dependable notification systems in emergencies. The funding will assist local governments and First Nations in enhancing their emergency preparedness. For instance, the Columbia Shuswap Regional District received $29,940 in 2023 to update evacuation plans and promote its Alertable emergency alert system. Projects funded will focus on mapping routes, improving notification plans, and conducting training exercises to test their effectiveness.
This funding is particularly vital as communities face increasing risks due to climate change. The initiative includes specific projects, such as enhancing evacuation route plans in the Cowichan Valley and Tla’amin Nation. Overall, these efforts aim to strengthen community resilience and ensure efficient responses during emergencies.
