Construction starts on new BC Cancer centre in Kamloops
Construction has commenced on a new BC Cancer centre in Kamloops, which will enhance local access to cancer care for residents in the Thompson-Cariboo-Shuswap region. This $386 million initiative will provide advanced radiation treatment, expected to deliver approximately 16,500 treatments annually for up to 1,200 patients. Currently, patients must travel to Kelowna or the Lower Mainland for necessary radiation services, creating significant logistical challenges. Health officials, including Minister of Health Josie Osborne, highlight that local access to care fosters better experiences and health outcomes. The centre will feature state-of-the-art technology, including high-energy radiation treatment linear accelerators, and will also include outpatient services and support spaces.
Construction is led by EllisDon Corporation, with upgrades to the existing oncology clinic scheduled to complete by 2029. This facility is part of B. C. 's 10-Year Cancer Action Plan, which aims to improve cancer care across the province. The project not only addresses growing treatment needs but also reflects a commitment to strengthening health-care infrastructure.
