Mental-health supports strengthen community, reduce stigma
The Province of British Columbia allocated $500,000 to Connections Place in Victoria to enhance mental health support and community safety. Minister of Health Josie Osborne highlighted the need for a welcoming environment for those seeking help. Connections Place, a community-based organization, uses a clubhouse model to provide peer support and initiatives that challenge mental illness stigma. The funding will help maintain operations that served over 182 active members, with 8,880 visits and 6,417 meals provided in 2024-25. Executive director Neelam Pahal expressed that the initiative fosters hope and purpose among individuals living with mental illness.
The funding reflects a growing understanding of the benefits of recovery-oriented community supports. MLA Nina Krieger praised the organization for empowering individuals to rebuild their lives and reduce stigma. This investment aligns with the government’s commitment to strengthening mental health and substance use care systems in British Columbia.
