New wildlife management area protects more of Great Bear Sea
British Columbia has established a wildlife management area that protects 1,450 hectares in the Great Bear Sea, collaborating with the Gitga’at and Gitxaała First Nations. The region is vital for diverse wildlife, including humpback whales and wild salmon, and supports food security for coastal communities. Minister Randene Neill highlighted the partnership's importance for biodiversity and economic growth. The area advances B. C.
's first Coastal Marine Strategy and responds to recommendations from the 2023 Marine Protected Area Network Action Plan, endorsed by 15 First Nations and the Province. Future actions include co-developing a management plan that prioritizes conservation while allowing for compatible resource-based activities. Public and stakeholder engagement will be crucial in this planning phase. Coastal First Nations-Great Bear Initiative CEO Christine Smith Martin noted the significance of these marine protected areas for cultural and economic development. This initiative aims to ensure healthy marine ecosystems that benefit all British Columbians.
